LEMDA aka London Ethnic Minority Deaf Association was formed to provide equal access and help improve the lives of ethnic deaf people in Greater London area. through five main aims:-empowerment, information, service, education & employment. LEMDA activities include events, celebration and trips, drop-in sessions, advocacy, workshops, peer support, training opportunities, personal development, volunteer training, information and advice. Its founder and co-ordinator was Barbara Burke. She is Deaf of Jamaican parentage. She is the first Black Deaf woman who went to National Black Deaf Advocates conference in Los Angeles in 1996
